Delayed flight or how we handled ~600 passengers

Then came my very first shift at the airport — and it turned out to be much more intense than I expected. A morning flight had been delayed for almost 12 hours, which meant that all those passengers were now flying out during my evening shift. Because of that, we suddenly had two large groups of passengers from different flights standing very close together, and we had to organize lines, redirect people, answer questions, and help everything move as smoothly as possible.

At first, I was nervous, but once the shift started, everything happened so quickly. I mostly worked at the kiosk area and with passenger lines, helping travelers check in, asking where they were flying, and directing them to the right places. I haven’t worked at baggage drop-off yet, but I felt very confident communicating with passengers directly.

Even though many travelers did not speak English very well, communication was still easy, and everyone was surprisingly patient and kind. There were no conflicts, no rude passengers, and the atmosphere felt much more positive than I expected. The students and team around me were also incredibly supportive, so I never felt alone or lost.

One of the most exciting parts of the shift was getting the chance to assist cabin crew members as well. Seeing them work in real life, wearing their uniforms and preparing for flights, honestly felt so inspiring to me. They were all incredibly kind, professional, and welcoming, which made the experience even more special.

At the end of the shift, we even got to take a group photo together, and it’s definitely a memory I’ll keep for a very long time. Moments like this remind me why I chose aviation in the first place. Hopefully, one day, I’ll be standing there not as a student, but as one of the cabin crew members myself.

The time went by so fast, even though we were constantly qmoving around. It was stressful, exciting, exhausting, and unforgettable all at the same time. And somehow, after all of it, it only made me love aviation even more.
